Nurturing existing and new opportunities for income generation among women in North Eastern Kenya

Background

  • Livestock rearing, agriculture and trade dominate the economies of North Eastern Kenya.
  • Less than 5% of the vast lands in the North are under irrigation. It’s important to note that the majority of arable land in the North does not have permanent rivers and experience low, erratic rainfall.
  • Up to 38% of the North’s population are able and of working age – unemployment rates are high, between 62.6%and 70% are unemployed.
  • The Kiman Foundation aims to nurture existing and upcoming community enterprises that empower women to engage in incoming generating

Programs and Activities

Miradi Hub

The Miradi Hub is a resource centre that brings together innovators, community representatives and funding organizations with the objective of nurturing and promoting income-generating opportunities among women in North Eastern Kenya. The Hub’s primary objective is to reduce poverty, improve livelihoods and promote financial inclusion through:

Entrepreneur Programs: providing basic instruction on how to start, run and grow businesses for individuals or groups.

  • Vocational Training: basic skills and knowledge to improve their business provided in partnership with organizations providing technical assistance.
  • Technical Support: in conjunction with funding partners, provision of technical support for specific skillsets or investments initiated by Kiman Foundation beneficiaries.
  • Our overall objective is to enable women to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development of women in North Eastern Kenya
